Winter: Quiet Rest and Big Plans
From November through March, Whispering Surf is closed and peaceful. The roads are often impassable with snow, and the campground itself rests under a blanket of winter stillness.
But behind the scenes, winter is far from idle.
This is the season of campground conferences and expos, where owners gather to swap stories, learn new ideas, and shop for merchandise for the year ahead. (Wait until you see this year’s clothing options!)
Winter is also when we hire staff for the upcoming season and begin planning projects — whether that means adding a small new amenity or tackling a larger infrastructure upgrade.
Life slows down just enough to create space for vision, creativity, and preparation.
Spring: Opening Day Feels Like Family Coming Home
Early spring is all about getting ready to open on May 1. As soon as the snow melts and temperatures rise above freezing, the work begins: leaf cleanup, tree trimming, deep cleaning, and sanitizing the water system are all part of our annual rhythm.
When opening day arrives, it truly feels like family coming home.
Returning seasonal campers begin opening their sites, and new seasonals settle in for the first time.
For our vacation guests, spring is a quieter, more personal time — you may be one of only a handful of campers in the park, and hospitality feels especially close and welcoming.
We celebrate the season with:
- FREE pancake breakfast on Mother’s Day
- FREE pancake breakfast on Father’s Day
- Free coffee in the Lodge on Saturday mornings (when enough campers are here)
Spring carries those first warm hints of summer, and the campground slowly comes back to life.
Summer: The Classic Camping Season
Summer at Whispering Surf is exactly what you imagine — full sites, bright days, and a campground buzzing with energy.
Kids fill the playground, families gather in the Lodge, people fish off the end of the dock, and the air carries the familiar scent of outdoor cooking, beach days, and campfire nights.
Even in our busiest season, the atmosphere remains relaxed and joyful.
One of my favorite moments is early morning, when the campground is just waking up and the day ahead feels full of possibility — or in the quiet evening hours, when everything settles down to rest.
During summer, we offer:
- Free coffee on Saturday mornings
- Free popcorn on Saturday evenings
- Community campfires
- Christmas in July weekend (Visit our website Events page for dates and details!)
These gatherings create easy opportunities for campers to connect with each other — and with our owner/staff team.
Fall: Crisp Air, Cozy Weekends, and My Favorite Season
As kids return to school, Whispering Surf begins to slow down again.
Fall is our most event-filled season, with weekends full of tradition, including:
- Ladies Crafting Weekend
- Halloween Fun Weekend
- Michigan Airstream Club Fall Rally
- End-of-Season Potluck
This is also the time when seasonals renew contracts for the next year and have the chance to move to open sites — what we lovingly call the “Seasonal Shuffle.”
Weekdays become peaceful again, much like spring, and you may find yourself enjoying the campground with only a few other vacation campers nearby.
Honestly, fall is my favorite season. The air turns crisp in the mornings, the colors deepen, and the bustle of summer gives way to preparation for winter rest.
Whispering Surf closes on October 15, and for a week or two afterward we winterize everything — draining water lines, shutting down cabins and buildings, and securing the campground until spring returns.
And then… the Cycle Begins Again
